England’s star player and Ashes top run-scorer, Joe Root, has signed a lucrative contract with New Balance.
The Yorkshire cricketer, currently ranked the world’s number three Test batsman, has signed for a six-figure sum believed to be worth around £200,000 a year – not too shabby!
TEAM NEW BALANCE
It’s safe to say Root is a happy bunny: “I am delighted to be joining forces with New Balance and I know I am in good company with my team-mates Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Gary Ballance. The kit is amazing and I’m looking forward to wearing it in my training and matches. It will also be great to get involved in future product developments with the New Balance team at the highest levels of the game.”
Australia’s new skipper Steve Smith is also in the New Balance dream team, which is giving Spartan’s hall of fame a run for its money: Root, Smith, Stokes and Dale Steyn vs. MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan and Mitchell Johnson.
A New Balance press release conveyed the brand’s excitement: “We are incredibly proud to introduce the newest member of our team of New Balance England Test cricket superstars, Joe Root. The worrying thing for the world’s bowlers is that Joe’s best years are still ahead of him! We look forward to working with Joe as he continues on his journey to even greater success and as New Balance further establishes itself in the sport around the globe!”
Like Gary Ballance, Joe Root will be using the popular New Balance TC 1260 collection. NB TC 1260 cricket bats, pads and gloves will be available at Cricket Direct – the home of the best choice of cricket gear online – from December 2015, in time for Christmas. The 860 and 560+ collections will offer more affordable alternatives for the club cricketer.
New Balance have forged a strong presence in South Africa where England will be visiting in 2016. The brand is the official apparel and footwear supplier to Cricket South Africa as well as individual sponsors of David Miller and Dale Steyn.
ROOT TO THE TOP
Root’s departure is a blow for Gunn & Moore: “We have sponsored Joe for 11 years – since he was 13 in fact – so whilst we are naturally disappointed, we of course understand that players move on for commercial reasons,” Unicorn Group Managing Director Edward Lowy told Cricket World. “We reflect on our long association with Joe through his formative cricketing years with very great pride.”
During Root’s former stint with Gunn & Moore, Root became Wisden Cricketer Of The Year, the world’s number one ranked batsman and Man of The Series in the 2015 Ashes. GM gave him his own bat called ‘Six6’, which has been one of Cricket Direct’s best sellers the past two seasons.
There can be no denying that this is one of the cricket industry’s biggest signings of recent times. Joe Root is an immense marketing asset: a pedigree across all three formats, a clean reputation, a cheeky, down-to-earth personality, and millions of fans worldwide. Also, he’s almost nailed on to be a future England captain, possibly across multiple formats. The only thing lacking on the CV is a contract in the Indian Premier League!
As New Balance, renowned for providing quality sports footwear, continues to augment its reputation in the cricket market, this signing is likely to see them go from strength to strength. It has undoubtedly caused a stir in the industry.
